The Art of Being Human–another dVerse challenge

A short poem I just wrote for the dVerse challenge. The challenge is “to write a metaphor poem that starts with the words ‘This being human is…

This being human is like being an alien

visiting from another planet

not knowing the names of the smallest flowers

but perceiving their earthy scent

not knowing the stuff the ground is made of—

but feeling its firmness with relief–

Only hearing the roar of the loudest,

fiercest animals around, and realizing

with dismay that their voices

are our own—that we are shouting for help

from every corner of the Earth

knowing no one will hear us in time.

I really resonate with these lines, especially the closing ones, and wish it were not so.

  2. Welcome to dVerse Poetics and thank you for sharing this poem, to which I’m sure many of us relate. I like the shift from the unfamiliar earthy scent to the ominous roars, and the revelation that it is us who are ‘shouting for help / from every corner of the Earth / knowing no one will hear us in time.’ A peek into the future, perhaps?

  3. It’s a bit pessimistic, isn’t it? I am generally optimistic about the future of humanity but the last four years have made their mark on me, I think!
